  • Notes
    • 1897 - Emigrated to the Yukon as gold prospector.

1903 - Briefly returned to tour Europe and visit his mother in England for Christmas. On leaving the Yukon he took out a "large poke" (large some of money) having "taken part in many interesting experiences" according to the Yukon Sun dated Wednesday September 23rd 1903, through selling claims on French Hill to O.R. Brenner. His partners in "13 Eldorado" at that time included Dunham, Sheets and Higgins.

1906 - Returned to Canada via New York City. Ellis Island records for 5th March 1906 have him arriving aboard the "Carmania" from Liverpool. Recorded as "In Transit" to Dawson City, Yukon. Occupation: "Miner". He clearly still retained some wealth since he arrived as a respectable "Second Cabin" Passenger, rather than in common "Steerage".
Carmania - Built by John Brown & Company, Clydebank, Scotland, 1905. 19,566 gross tons; 650 (bp) feet long; 72 feet wide. Steam turbine engines, triple screw. Service speed 18.5 knots. 2,650 passengers (300 first class, 350 second class, 2,000 third class).Refitted in 1926 to cabin, tourist, third. Two funnels, two masts. Built for Cunard Line, British flag, in 1905 and named Carmania. Liverpool-New York service. Served as an armed merchant cruiser, then troopship 1914-18. Scrapped at Blyth in 1932.

August 1913 - Lost in woods whilst on a prospecting trip on the Moose Horn River, 20 miles from Teslin Lake in British Columbia. Body never found.

He left Bristol, England to seek his fortune prospecting for gold from the town of Eldorado in the Yukon in the 1890's. He did make quite an impression out there by all accounts - particularly in one account in the Yukon Sun of 23 September 1903. Here he is featured setting off for England (after taking out a "large poke" - presumably meaning alot of money) to visit his family and tour Europe after selling claims at "French Hill". The newspaper also states that Edward (or "Teddy") "has taken part in many interesting experiences"! The fascinating part is that the (rather worn) copy of the newspaper I have has been "censored" by the careful tearing out of an anecdote of a shooting incident - only the final line remains - "...the cheek by a bullet and bears the scar left by the wound to this day." Hmm.

Dawson News Article mentions Teddy leaving for the UK:
      http://news.google.com/newspapers?id=PFcjAAAAIBAJ&sjid=-CgDAAAAIBAJ&dq=cullinane&pg=3727%2C3039829

Teddy returned to the Yukon after having brought back gifts for his family (I have gold tie pin stamped "Dawson" which he presented to my great grandmother during his Christmas 1903 visit).
The sad part of the tale is that he was lost whilst on a prospecting trip in the woods near Teslin Lake on the Yukon/ British Columbia border in July/August 1913. His body was never found, though his prospecting partner Reginald Naish, was. I have a copy of Naish's harrowing tale of having an accident with their raft on the river. They lost their knives and other tools with which they could have repaired the craft. Also Teddy had fallen ill. Naish made camp at the riverside and left Teddy to seek help only to become more hopelessly lost. He was eventually found, delirious with hunger after 20 days by a group of prospectors who happened to be in the area. Teddy was never seen again. On returning to the camp the afore-mentioned group could only find the makeshift camp where he had been left, and his husky dogs roaming free nearby. (The "family story" went that he had been eaten by his husky's! Though there is no evidence to support this).

After his death Teddy's mother Eliza (nee Child) back in Bristol, fought a long battle by letter with the Canadian authorities to gain access to her sons lands etc in the Klondyke. She had been left penniless by Teddy's death as his incoming also supported her. I don't know if her battle was ever won, though judging by the few papers of hers I have, I believe she probably did get something back though it took a good 12 years and she died not long after in 1923.

Well that should keep you busy for a while !!
One more thing...when l saw the picture of Teddy Cullinane l could not believe my eyes....my son Martin is EXACTLY like him....it was so strange . Martin thought it "really cool".
My brothe Frank and l have the "Cullinane features" the nose (unfortunatly!) and the long face , and my son has inherited them from me.
He has Teddys image as a screen saver, he really cant believe how similar they are.

One more story about teddy.Apparently during a visit home he gave a rock to one of his family and told them to get it polished up.None could be bothered and it ended up in my Grandfathers hands .
He got it polished up as instructed by Teddy and it polished up into a chrystal like stone which he then presented to my Grandmother in the shape of a necklace, that got him plenty of brownie points !
That passed to my Mother because she was the only girl and my Mother gave it to me because l was the baby of the family.

Anyway must dash, l hope this hasnt taken up TOO much time.
It would be nice to find out bit about your family.

      Keep in touch

      Hi Mark
Well eventually got to Kew but only found John Cullinane Reserve paper when he was a Vitualler in the Victoria Hotel in Dover ( I visited there a few years ago it is now a stationers but the sign of the hotel is still there). I will be going to Kew again but now for a few weeks so shall have another dig because he definitely was pensioned.
The postcardswe have from Edward were given to me by my mother-in-law, one of them was written to my husbands father, the dates we made out on the address part looks like 1907 and 1910.
Hope you enjoy looking at the enclosures Edwards birth is there also.
Whilst looking at a site on the net did come across an Ellen T Cullinane marrying a Harold V Stanton living in Islington, do they belong to your part of the family?
My husband's niece has some old photos which I am hoping to look at to see if any of them are connected to the ones you have on your site, the trouble is she is having so much done to her house so is unable to locate them at the moment but will keep it in mind for future digging.
      Best Wishes
      Theresa

      Hi Theresa
Many thanks for the attachments! The Chatham documents are really interesting, would be keen to hear of anything else you uncover at Kew!
I don't know anything about the Mounted Police pieces regarding Teddy though - if you are able to send them on I would love see them! The file of docs that the Yukon archives sent me were lots of letters back and forth between various departments in Canada with a few from Teddy's family back in the UK. Pretty much everything dates from after Teddy's disappearance in 1913. Do you have this same file?
Do you have a copy of the birth cert for Teddy by the way? You mentioned that his father was recorded as Edward Timothy on his birth cert. I don't have a copy so if you have this electronic format would you be able to send it?
      Keep in touch
      All the best

      Hi Mark
Sorry I haven't been in touch have been off line for 5 days but back to normal hopefully now.
Thanks for the Census but I had that one already. Liked the article in Who Do You Think You Are? quite a celebrity aren't you.
All the paperwork you have on Edward I have a fair bit of that but not sure if you have the Mounted Police pieces I was sent from the Canadian Archives if not I will send it to you.
I also have one of the original photos of Edward you obviously have a large one ours came from my father-in-law years ago.
The Cullinane name article was given to me in 1982 which was in an Irish monthly that the local priest gave to me although I wasn't doing the family tree at that time, I have typed it up because it was quite small and think you would have difficulty in reading, the spellings you may think I have typed wrongly but can assure you I have made sure everything is as was in the article, hope you like it.
The other two are John Cullinane's history of his ships which I received from Chatham, as you can see he didn't use his full name like a lot of them way back.
John was pensioned off so will look to see what I can find out at Kew when I get to go there. As the history was on A3 paper have done it in two halves so Wildfire II will be there twice so you can overlap it hopefully
Going back to Timothy who came over from Ireland with his parents he was also known as Edward Cullinane on his marriage certificate although on Edward's birth he is down as Edward Timothy, talk about confusing, the only marriage I have found in Ireland is for Mary Sullivan but the marriage was in Roman Catholic, Kilcummin Parish,Kerry so not sure about this, needs a bit more digging.
Hope some of this helps but doing my head in getting the correct names just like my own tree I am doing, they seem to have a lot of the same name years ago don't they?
Well Mark good luck with all.
      All the best
      Theresa

      Hi Theresa
Many thanks for your email. Yes I think you are correct. Others have suggested the same before, and I too have never found any official reference to a "Jack". So this evening I had a look for John on the 1891 census and came up with the attached.
It seems he was based on the ship "AUDACIOUS", so I agree that John, and the individual that had been known as "Jack" to my family, must be one and the same person.
Thanks for the prompt to finally get to the bottom of this!
By the way, are you related to this CULLINANE family?
      All the best
