- [S47] Email, CAMPBELL, Robert; 2007 08 15;.
Hi Jenny
I am Jackie Campbell (nee Gilbert) and Mark Stanton, who you are in touch
with about the Hudson family, is my nephew on my husband's side. I should
have contacted you ages ago when I got the first email from Mark but here I
am now and hope I can give you some information.
Wardrobe Hudson is my great grandfather. Ada Hudson (his daughter) is my
grandmother and John Charles William Gilbert is my father.
Ada Hudson married John Alfred Thompson 23.12.1909 and they had two children
Dorothy Mary Thompson and Harold Hudson Thompson. John Alfred Thompson died
young in 1913 so they had only been married 4 years. He was killed in an
accident building the Danum at Doncaster. Ada then met and married William
Gilbert and they had 2 children, John Charles William Gilbert (always known
as Charlie) and Elsie Vera Gilbert (always known as Vera). He also brought
up Dorothy and Harold as his own.
My mother, Annie Gilbert, is still alive and I asked her about my father
attending a wedding. She said he did go to the wedding of his cousin Walter
Hudson in the summer of 1946 - is that your father? She can't remember him
saying he was a witness. She couldn't go to the wedding because she had
just given birth to me (2.6.46). Does this date tie in with your parents
wedding date? She has a photograph of the bride and groom and is going to
look it up for me and see if there is anything written on the back.
I hope this bit of information is useful. As a matter of interest, I hold
the family bible given to me by my father via Ada via Wardrobe. It has a
few entries in the births deaths and marriages and pressed in it is the
original silk announcing the death of Herbert Hudson (21.9.25) on Dale's
side.
I haven't heard anything from Dale for a long time so don't know if he has
made progress in his quest about the name Wardrobe. He was trying to find
out how such a name originated.
Best wishes, Jackie
