Hello Mervyn,
I was so grateful to receive an attachment from you that I received from Mark Stanton about memories of my family.
I am the daughter of Arthur William Samuel Heath and Laura Bessie Heath who you say you met and my grandparents were Samuel Charles Heath and Deborah Elizabeth Ann (Dunn). I can later give you stories and fill in gaps about them.
I have been going around in circles about Samuel Charles Heath's parents, John Charles Heath and Matilda Mabbett. I had found the same information as you in the censuses about John Charles Heath but Matilda was more difficult to trace. I had to go on snipets that my mother had told me.
Mum said that Matilda left John Charles and went to London and that Samuel Charles had step-sisters. There was also an 'aunt' Tilly who stayed with them in Essex St, Bedminster, Bristol.
Searching for Matilda Heath, I found in the 1881 census, living at 2 Peerless St, St Lukes Parish, Finsbury
John Carlile (Head), married aged 25, engine driver, b.London, Surrey
Matilda wife aged 24 machinist, b. Bristol
Matilda daughter, aged 2 b. Middx, St Lukes
Arabella daughter, aged 9 months b. Middx, st Lukes
I have been unable to find a marriage for Matilda and John but did they just say status was married when they were not divorced and living together? I have the birth certificate for daughter Matilda born on 7th April 1879 where she is named as Matilda Alice Mary, and mother is given as Matilda Alice Carlile, formerly Mabbett and fatheris John Carlile. This daughter is the 'Aunt' Tilly referred to by my mother.
Later in the 1891 two more daughters have been born and living at 10 Bloom....? St, Marylebone, London
Entry given as:
John Carlile (Head) married 38 engine driver b.London St Sepulchre
Matilda Carlile married 42 b. Bristol, Bedminster
Arabella Carlile aged 10 b. London, Marylebone
Mary Carlile, aged 6 b. Bristol, bedminster
Alice Carlile, aged 4 b. London, Marylebone
N.B eldest daughter Matilda A M M Carlile aged 12 by now not there. I found her staying with Isabella Bennett aged 42 at 15 Bartley St Bedminster, Bristol. Mum had also told me that 'Aunt'Tilly stayed with Arabella and went to a convent (probably a school ) in Redcatch St, Bristol. and my Aunt Beatie also mentioned Samuel Charles Heath's step sisters Tilly and Alice.
It appears that Matilda Mabbett lied about her age because on these 2 censuses her ages do not tally but perhaps she told John Carlile she was not as old as she was when she met him. Also could not find a marriage for them but perhaps she did not divorce and lied as to marital status on censuses!
I cannot find them on the 1901 census but I think I have found a death for a John Carlile between 1891 an 1901. Yet again I cannot find what happened to Matilda Mabbett or where she was after 1891 but her children with John Carlile would mean that they were half-sisters to Samuel Charles Heath because they had the same mother. 'Aunt Tilly' is on the wedding photograph of Edwin Charles Heath to Gladys.
I know that Matilda A M M Carlile married a Sidney Bartlett and they had a daughter Doris in 1908 I think.
I have spent so much time trying to research Matilda Mabbett as I think you have. On her marriage certificate to John Charles Heath, her father is given as William Mabbett, glass cutter. However, when I sent for her birth certificate Matilda was born on 1st July 1850, her father is named as Matthew Mabbett, and mother Matilda Mabbutt, formerly White at 6 Harford St, Bristol,
Can find no information about this William Mabbett yet.
Arabella's birth certificate shows she was born on 2nd September 1848 at 9 Harford St to Matilda Mabbutt, formerly White and father is Richard Mabbutt.
The plot certainly thickens!
I will send a cop of this to Mark Stanton.
Best wishes,
Adrienne nee Heath

- [S12] Marriage Certificate, HEATH, William Charles; & BEATON, Mary; 1889;.
Mervyn has a photo-copy of the Marriage Certificate, No. 340, issued in the Parish of St. John the Evangelist, Hammersmith, Middlesex, on 28 January, 1889, recording Marriage, after Banns, between :
William Charles HEATH, 19, Bachelor, (Ship's) Steward, 33 Cardross Street, Father John Charles HEATH,
and
Mary BEATON, 19, Spinster, - 33 Cardross Street, Father John George BEATON.
(Witnessed in the presence of Fred John Manders and Louisa Groombridge).
The copy was one I received from a cousin whose mother was, like my Mum, a daughter of William Charles, so, as you say we have not much doubt about the authenticity of the record.

Hello Mark,
I hope you don't mind me contacting you but I have recently started researching my roots and I think I can answer a few of you queries. I have just looked at your tree on Rootsweb and started with Samuel Charles Heath, my grandfather. I have a copy of his birth certificate and he was born on 28th January 1869 not February. He married Elizabeth Ann Dunn and they had 5 children Edwin C (Charles I think) b 4.10.1985, Victor Emmanuel b 8.4.1898?, Sidney George b 22.5.1901, Dora Irene b 8.8.1905 and lastly, my father, Arthur William Samuel b. 25.12.08.
I know that you have had other queries over what happened to Matilda Mabbett who married John Charles Heath in 1868 but my mother said that she left John (or it could have been he left her). I don't think that she died in childbirth as was suggested but lived with or married a John Henry Carlile. They had 2 daughters Matilda and Arabella. The daughter Matilda is I think who was referred to as Aunt Tilly in my family and was in fact Samuel Heath's step sister because they both had the same mother. Arabella was their aunt and is why on the 1891 census they are in the same household as Isabella (Arabella) Bennett and down Samuel down as nephew and Matilda down as niece. Aunt Tilly (Matilda Carlile) later married Sidney H Bartlett. She came often to visit my father's family in Essex St, Bedminster, Bristol and appears on one of my uncle's wedding photographs and sent a photo of herself to Deborah.
I hope this makes sense. I have so much to sort out and verify with certificates.
Hoping I have a reply,
Adrienne nee Heath

Hello Mark,
I was delighted to have a reply from you and your great uncle's attachment. As his grandfather and my grandfather were brothers, I think that makes him my cousin, twice removed doesn't it? It is exciting to discover distant relatives.
Tell him that last month I went to the funeral of Brian Heath in Bristol, my Uncle Sid and Aunt Beatie's son. While there I visited the Bristol Record Office and it was this that got me hooked on seriously researching my family. Whilst there I found the reference to Matilda Mabbett and John Charles Heath and sent for their marriage certificate where her father is named as William Mabbett, glass cutter. I subsequently sent for Matilda's birth certifcate (born 1st July1850 at 6 Harford St, Bristol, only to find her father named as Matthew Mabbett. When Arabella's birth certificate arrived, her father was Richard Mabbett and she was born on 2nd Sept 1848 at 9 Harford St, Bristol. So began the quest trying to unravel the truth about the Mabbetts which is still on going!!
Matilda Mabbett's daughter by John Henry Carlile, had a lot of connection with my family, especially Deborah Elizabeth Ann and can be seen on some family photographs.
I have photographs of Uncle Vic (Victor Emmanuel in his Royal Marine Light Infantry Uniform and in his Royal Marine unifrom when it amalgamated. I am not sure if he was ever in the Merchant Navy.
I did know that Samuel Charles Heath was called Deborah Elizabeth Ann Dunn, it was just my haste in typing, leaving out the 'Deborah'.
I am so impressed by your website and will have to check people in my family now. If I can fill in any gaps I will contact you.
Looking forward to future contact.
Best wishes,
Adrienne
