  06/11 In 1891 John is working as a Stoker aboard the 2nd Class Battleship "Audacious". "The ship's refit was complete in March 1883 and she again relieved Iron Duke as flagship of the China Station later that year. Audacious remained there until 1889 when she returned to Chatham where she was refitted, rearmed and replaced her masts and rigging with simple pole masts fitted with fighting tops . Upon the completion of her refit in 1890 she returned to Hull for the third time until the ship was decommissioned in 1894." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Audacious_(1869) The China Station was a historical formation of the British Royal Navy . It was formally the units and establishments responsible to the Commander-in-Chief, China. From 1831 to 1865 the East Indies Station and the China Station were a single command known as the East Indies and China Station .[1] The China Station, established in 1865, covered the coasts of China and its navigable rivers, the western part of the Pacific Ocean , and the waters around the Dutch East Indies .[2] These responsibilities did not imply territorial claims, although the navy often co-operated with British commercial interests in the above areas. The China Station had bases at Singapore , HMS Tamar (1865-1941 and 1945-1997) in Hong Kong and Wei Hai Wei (1898-1930). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/China_Station It seems that the family recollection of John was that he was also known as "Jack". The story goes that "Jack" was in the Navy and told stories of chasing the Sheikh of Zanzibars' wives! Also of transporting guns out of warships on the Zambesi. Boer war? Originally we had Jack and John as separate individuals in the database, however, with the discovery of John in the Navy on the 1891 census (and the lack of any sign of a "Jack" in any official records) it would seem that John and "Jack" are one and the same person. In 1871 at the time of the Census Timothy and Eliza had James, aged 1, with them, but John, also aged 1, was being looked after by Eliza's mum, Mrs. Child. It appears that James and John were twins, because on the 1881 Census John was aged 11 but there was a James aged 1. So did James, the twin aged 1 in 1871, die, to be remembered by the re-use of his name for a later son in 10 years' time? It's the only explanation that occurs to me at this time. Hi Mark Well eventually got to Kew but only found John Cullinane Reserve paper when he was a Vitualler in the Victoria Hotel in Dover ( I visited there a few years ago it is now a stationers but the sign of the hotel is still there). I will be going to Kew again but now for a few weeks so shall have another dig because he definitely was pensioned. The postcardswe have from Edward were given to me by my mother-in-law, one of them was written to my husbands father, the dates we made out on the address part looks like 1907 and 1910. Hope you enjoy looking at the enclosures Edwards birth is there also. Whilst looking at a site on the net did come across an Ellen T Cullinane marrying a Harold V Stanton living in Islington, do they belong to your part of the family? My husband's niece has some old photos which I am hoping to look at to see if any of them are connected to the ones you have on your site, the trouble is she is having so much done to her house so is unable to locate them at the moment but will keep it in mind for future digging. The file of docs that the Yukon archives sent me were lots of letters back and forth between various departments in Canada with a few from Teddy's family back in the UK. Pretty much everything dates from after Teddy's disappearance in 1913. Do you have this same file? Do you have a copy of the birth cert for Teddy by the way? You mentioned that his father was recorded as Edward Timothy on his birth cert. I don't have a copy so if you have this electronic format would you be able to send it? Thanks for the Census but I had that one already. Liked the article in Who Do You Think You Are? quite a celebrity aren't you. All the paperwork you have on Edward I have a fair bit of that but not sure if you have the Mounted Police pieces I was sent from the Canadian Archives if not I will send it to you. I also have one of the original photos of Edward you obviously have a large one ours came from my father-in-law years ago. The Cullinane name article was given to me in 1982 which was in an Irish monthly that the local priest gave to me although I wasn't doing the family tree at that time, I have typed it up because it was quite small and think you would have difficulty in reading, the spellings you may think I have typed wrongly but can assure you I have made sure everything is as was in the article, hope you like it. The other two are John Cullinane's history of his ships which I received from Chatham, as you can see he didn't use his full name like a lot of them way back. John was pensioned off so will look to see what I can find out at Kew when I get to go there. As the history was on A3 paper have done it in two halves so Wildfire II will be there twice so you can overlap it hopefully Going back to Timothy who came over from Ireland with his parents he was also known as Edward Cullinane on his marriage certificate although on Edward's birth he is down as Edward Timothy,talk about confusing, the only marriage I have found in Ireland is for Mary Sullivan but the marriage was in Roman Catholic, Kilcummin Parish,Kerry so not sure about this, needs a bit more digging. Hope some of this helps but doing my head in getting the correct names just like my own tree I am doing, they seem to have a lot of the same name years ago don't they? Well Mark good luck with all.
