Hello Mark,
Delighted with Rachel, your new family contact. I too have found the variety of Jacobs and Josephs and Sarah Heaths on the Censuses does seem to complicate matters, and the actual relationships are not easy to unravel without the individual BMD records to support one's suppositions. In Rachel's case, of course, the Birth Certificate should hopefully show exactly who her Elizabeth's mother and father really were. But on the level of supposition only, I see I have pencil notes on my paperwork that suggest Joseph (1819) was perhaps married to Sarah (1830 - born Camerton, Somerset), and their children were also probably, Ann (1849) and Elizabeth (1850). There does seem to be some age discrepancy between husband and wife but it was perfectly possible, I suppose, and the poor man died on 07/09/1852 at 33 years old and, again, his Death Certificate would reveal the reason - perhaps either the strain of coal-mining or of his young family!
Incidentally Rachel quotes Jacob (1834) as not marrying Sarah Helps until 1859, but I have noted that he wasn't finished then, for she died in June 1895, and he married again on 25/12/1895 to Sarah Langridge (1834) at Paulton, as witnessed by John Langridge and Sarah Watts This second bride's father was James Langridge, chimney-sweep, which makes me wonder whether he was there too to bring them good luck!
Love to all,
Mervyn.
