Ancestry.com has record for a William Charles HEATH; b1871; French Polisher; a boarder in St Marylebone. Listed as born Clapham, London; Single. This is the only "William Charles HEATH" in the 1911 census of the correct age. However, given that he may have been keen to hide his tracks as he had left the family, perhaps this is a red herring and he is not listed on the census at all.

Ancestry.com has census record for 1916 in Manitoba which match Birth year and location based on other records for William Charles. Spouse is listed as "Thresa". Potential children as "Louise" and "William":

Notes in RG STANTON papers (General Information/ HEATH) suggest that when Bert was born in 1907 the family were running a fruit and fish shop in Mill Lane Bristol. They then moved to London c1907 when Bert was about 6 weeks old, possibly living at Long Lane in East Finchley, where William Charles drove a Napier car for a job.

Edith HEATH's marriage certificate (1918) lists her father William Charles as a Chauffer. However, we know by this time he was actually in Canada and no longer a chauffer. Perhaps this is his last known occupation before the family lost touch with him (prior to 1918).

Apparently according to Annie May, William was a heavy drinker who worked as a Ships Steward on Campbells White Funnel Fleet Services serving ports on the Bristol Channel, and treated his wife and his older children extremely severely at times. There was also a story of one Christmas or New Year when his family were visiting his brother, Samuel Charles's family (probably in Essex Street, Bedminster), when he received news (goodness knows how) that his house (and maybe the cycle shop) in Gloucester Road was on fire. It was suggested he ran all the way home to deal with it!
"This apparently happened to Grandma Nan's family when her father had a shop at 116, Gloucester Road in Horfield, Bristol (it amused her to recall that that part of the road at the time was locally referred to as 'Pigsty Hill'), where her father was a 'cycle agent'. In my early days of research, Cousin Doris Fletcher had said that her mother (Edith Florence Heath) told her this had happened, so the story started as a 'family legend'. Later on, on searching through Wright's Bristol Directory, an annual publication, in Bristol Central Library, I found in 1906 a 'William Heath, cycle agent' recorded at 386 Gloucester Road, and in 1907 the Directory recorded William Charles Heath at 116 Gloucester Road. (Auntie Edie had also told Doris she remembered a motor-cycle displayed on the pavement in front of the shop where her father sold cycles - (a motor-cycle that far back in time would have been unusual enough to attract attention) - and she went on to say that the family were celebrating Christmas with William Charles' brother, Samuel and his wife Deborah in Bedminster, when 'news came through' (exactly 'how' is not clear) that there was a fire at their place in Gloucester Road, and apparently William Charles ran all the way home - but nothing was saved - the business and all belongings were gone. This 'family legend' may be (or may not be?) confirmed by the fact that the 1908 publication of Wright's Bristol Directory recorded neither a 'William Charles Heath' nor the existence of a '116 Gloucester Road' ! Nan knew that their place in Gloucester Road was burnt down but she never said very much to me about it; I somehow have a feeling she may have sensed there might have been something a bit shady (perhaps insurance-wise?) about it, and it's best not to say too much! Incidentally since researching this some years ago, the 1901 Census had revealed that William C. Heath, aged 30, Cycle Agent, was living with his family at 2, Olveston Road, Horfield, Bristol, which is higher up Gloucester Road, on the opposite side from where the shops were, so he had to commute to his shop premises; the Census shows Nan aged 8 and Edith aged 1. I also calculated that it was around May 1907 that William Charles decided to take his wife and family off to live in London."
Apparently his whole family went to live in London (where he drove one of the first trams) and then became a chauffeur of an early Bentley or Daimler or something, before, around 1910 or so, sometime after Bert was born, he decided to abandon his family altogether and he moved off to Canada (possibly Winnipeg, Manitoba), where he made a new life for himself. His family never talked very much about him to us after that! Though there is of course only anecdotal evidence of this, we know it did leave the eldest daughter Annie May to go into service to put toward the upkeep of the family. (See notes on Annie May HEATH).

      Hello Mark,
I imagine that your underquoted message was automated. I am family, and believe we met briefly at your Grandfather Ronald's thanksgiving service. Certainly your father knows me. My father was Herbert Heath, sister of Annie Heath. Coincidentally, I mailed your Uncle Mervyn. yesterday im:
      "..................
I did a search of Passenger Lists and think I traced our mutual grandfather's departure from UK. A William Heath (middle names not given) sailed aboard "Virginian" from Liverpool for Montreal on 19th July 1912 aged 41 (which ties in with DOB 1871). Now it will mean trying to find further details from Montreal which I will follow up in my usual swift manner!
I (and Leila) both met Uncle Albert and his daughter Pat sometime before we were married (in 1958). Pat was unmarried, quite a bit older than I, and had a large purple patch on her face. They told us that they lived in Maidstone and we tried to trace them when we moved to London, but no joy.
I've had a look at Stantonetal and must complement Mark. The shot 0f Richmond Terrace surprised me; I wondered how anyone recalled that Leila and I lived there (1958-62 in No. 4 on the same floor as your mother) - what a coincidence.

      Hello Mark,

I hope you don't mind me contacting you but I have recently started researching my roots and I think I can answer a few of you queries. I have just looked at your tree on Rootsweb and started with Samuel Charles Heath, my grandfather. I have a copy of his birth certificate and he was born on 28th January 1869 not February. He married Elizabeth Ann Dunn and they had 5 children Edwin C (Charles I think) b 4.10.1985, Victor Emmanuel b 8.4.1898?, Sidney George b 22.5.1901, Dora Irene b 8.8.1905 and lastly, my father, Arthur William Samuel b. 25.12.08.

I know that you have had other queries over what happened to Matilda Mabbett who married John Charles Heath in 1868 but my mother said that she left John (or it could have been he left her). I don't think that she died in childbirth as was suggested but lived with or married a John Henry Carlile. They had 2 daughters Matilda and Arabella. The daughter Matilda is I think who was referred to as Aunt Tilly in my family and was in fact Samuel Heath's step sister because they both had the same mother. Arabella was their aunt and is why on the 1891 census they are in the same household as Isabella (Arabella) Bennett and down Samuel down as nephew and Matilda down as niece. Aunt Tilly (Matilda Carlile) later married Sidney H Bartlett. She came often to visit my father's family in Essex St, Bedminster, Bristol and appears on one of my uncle's wedding photographs and sent a photo of herself to Deborah.

I hope this makes sense. I have so much to sort out and verify with certificates.

      Hoping I have a reply,
      Adrienne nee Heath

    15. [S47] Email, QUARMBY, Adrienne; 2008 09 05;.
      Hello Mark,

I was delighted to have a reply from you and your great uncle's attachment. As his grandfather and my grandfather were brothers, I think that makes him my cousin, twice removed doesn't it? It is exciting to discover distant relatives.

Tell him that last month I went to the funeral of Brian Heath in Bristol, my Uncle Sid and Aunt Beatie's son. While there I visited the Bristol Record Office and it was this that got me hooked on seriously researching my family. Whilst there I found the reference to Matilda Mabbett and John Charles Heath and sent for their marriage certificate where her father is named as William Mabbett, glass cutter. I subsequently sent for Matilda's birth certifcate (born 1st July1850 at 6 Harford St, Bristol, only to find her father named as Matthew Mabbett. When Arabella's birth certificate arrived, her father was Richard Mabbett and she was born on 2nd Sept 1848 at 9 Harford St, Bristol. So began the quest trying to unravel the truth about the Mabbetts which is still on going!!

Matilda Mabbett's daughter by John Henry Carlile, had a lot of connection with my family, especially Deborah Elizabeth Ann and can be seen on some family photographs.

I have photographs of Uncle Vic (Victor Emmanuel in his Royal Marine Light Infantry Uniform and in his Royal Marine unifrom when it amalgamated. I am not sure if he was ever in the Merchant Navy.
I did know that Samuel Charles Heath was called Deborah Elizabeth Ann Dunn, it was just my haste in typing, leaving out the 'Deborah'.

I am so impressed by your website and will have to check people in my family now. If I can fill in any gaps I will contact you.

      Looking forward to future contact.

      Best wishes,
      Adrienne
