Hiya All - hope all is well with the family! Everyone here is going strong.

Sandy in America and I have a genealogy bone which we can't let go of and I wondered if any of you have any crumbs that might help.

Sandy has found that Alice Campbell (born 1885) went over to America in June 1939 (just before the war) to visit her daughter May - records call her Mary Ligoria (the spelling of this name changes all the time!!). She travelled with a

Maud Taylor aged 51 wife of Henry Taylor of Fortress Road, Kentish Town,
Adelaide Crowley aged 57 wife of James Crowley, Crouch End
Louisa Davies aged 71, mother of Rose Tanner, Southport

These 3 state that they were going to visit their friend Rebecca Smith (born Rebecca West 1874) - Rebecca is Alice's sister who was married to John Beckham and when he died in 1912 she moved over to New York and married a Patrick Smith.

Do you know of any of these people? Bit of a long short I know, but if you don't ask you don't get!

Also, I have found that Rebecca (Aunt Becs to Shirley) had a daughter Ethel Beckham (b 1901) who married a James Taylor (b 1895 in England and emigrated in 1911)(thanks Terry for the Taylor name you told me about in 2006) in America and they kept travelling over to the UK - I wonder if they were the 'rich relations' I keep hearing about. Alice was also a frequent traveller as well. Look how many times I found them travelling back to the States:

      Email to Sandy:

Hi Sandy - another nugget from Ancestry

I have found Rebecca Smith travelling back to New York in 1933 from Southampton on the Berengaria with her son George Smith aged 17 - they both have the Astoria home address so I know its them.

And in Nov 1925 with Ethel and James Taylor on Aquitania

And again in July 1946 on the John Ericsson.

And again Feb 1950 on the Queen Mary

And again Nov 1951 on the Ryndam

And again Sept 1953 with Ethel Beckham Taylor and James Taylor on SS Santa Paula

There is also a Rebecca Smith on a Pan Am flight in March 1953 London to New York

Ethel and James Taylor also came to home to New York from London in November 1947 on the Yarmouth

Ethel and James Taylor First Class on the Liberte Oct 1955

Ethel and James Taylor flew Sabena from Manchester on route to New York - first class - Oct 1956

Ethel and James Taylor on the Maurentania June 1957

The records finish in 1957 but Shirley remembers some posh relations visiting her with Alice in the 1960's in Muswell Hill but can't remember who they were!

Anyway if anything rings any bells do let me know

      Best wishes to everyone

      Eva

This is the log kept at Ellis Island of Doris Beckham’s family’s arrival in NY. 1st and 2nd class passengers disembarked at the Hudson River piers, while 3rd and lower class passengers went via ferry to Ellis Island for immigration. These are snapshots of the ships’ manifests that I got while taking my kids to Ellis Island some years ago. I think the #2 stamped on the page means second class, would have to ask the Ellis Island historians to know for sure.
Full passenger record (Rebecca and 5 children shown) Oldest child is 11 years, 7 months, so marriage would have been by 1900. I believe Rebecca’s husband was either dead or out of the picture when they immigrated (Charles knows for sure.) You can extrapolate the birth dates of the children to the nearest month by subtracting their ages from the date of the manifest.

      Notes from grandson of Rebecca. See Email source DAVIES, 2008 07 23;
"My mother(Doris) said that the original intention was to go to Seattle, where Rebecca had a brother (?). Doris claimed they never went through Ellis Island, but came second class with Ethel, Maude and Robert and a maid with her child."
