Am forwarding info. that might add certified detail to the little on her side of the family that we know already, and, apart from confirming points already picked up, explains how and why Samuel Charles Heath and his future wife, Deborah, were brought together.
Hope you all are well, and enjoying the Summer,
Love,
Mervyn.

Dear Mervyn,
On Matilda Mabbett's marriage certificate, her husband's name is entered as John Osborne Stewart. I picked up the Oborne on a Census but I think the certificates are a more reliable source.
Arabella was also referred to as Isabella on the 1891 census PRO Ref RG12/1949. I found this while searching for Samuel Charles Heath. The entry is as follows:-
living at 15 Bartley Street, Bedminster
Isabella Bennett (Head) widow, aged 42, a tailoress, born St James, Bristol
Matilda Steward(t) (mother), widow, aged 70 " "
George Dunn, (boarder), single, aged 57, general labourer " "
(His daughter Deborah Elizabeth Ann Dunn was to marry Samuel Charles Heath the following year)
Samuel Charles Heath, (nephew), single aged 22 " "
Matilda Carlile, (niece) aged 12 born London St Lukes
I have Matilda and George Blackburn living at 25 Frome St in the Parish of St James and St Paul from the 1871 Census
and then in 1877 Arabella marries Samuel Joseph BENNETT. I am not sure why she is Arabella Mabbett Barlow when she marries. I shall have to send for another marriage certificate and will let you know if I find out anything further.
Samuel Charles Heath spent more time living with Arabella than his own mother. He was living with her and Samuel Bennett in 1881 aged 12, again at 15 Bartley St, Bedminster.
I must now file some of these papers before they get lost!
Best wishes,
Adrienne

Dear Adrienne,
What a speedy reply to-day - thank you so much!
You mention the word 'guilty'. Please don't allow yourself feel the slightest pang. (If it's because of any feeling I have expressed, or the way that I've put it, I'm very sorry) - in return I have found you always to be very 'open' (i.e. generous and honest) - and very enthusiastic! These characteristics are valuable and should be appreciated, but whatever else you do, do preserve your enthusiasm!
I would agree with your thoughts so far on Matilda and the possible effect of local living conditions upon her lifestyle. It would appear that even the moral effect of a church background was new in her area, as St. Luke's was for many years just an 'outreach' parish for St. Philip & St. Jacob which was within the city boundary. This was probably the reason why it didn't occur to her young daughter, (1850) Matilda, to have any of her three sons baptised soon after their birth - they were baptised some time later by their foster-relatives in their own parishes. (This is not just a critical comment, you understand, but the point is made in order to try and understand their attitudes and their way of living).
Incidentally, Adrienne, can I ask now you have the Marriage Certificate of (1821) Matilda to John Oborne STEWART, would you mind checking for me the exact spelling of his name - should it be 'Oborne' or 'Osborne'? - both versions appear in various different documents, and you now have the official answer to hand!
The inscriptions in your 'Blackburn' Bible are interesting in view of my remark in the updated version of the MABBETT/HEATH connection schedule, that by 2/3 April 1871 Arabella had separated from her husband and was recorded as being in London. It now seems this latter needs checking out again, but there is now a new line to go in there, that 'Matilda Alice BLACKBURN was born on 9 June 1871' - whether in London or in Bristol. Your Bible is now part of the authentication of the Family History record, so keep it safe! Exciting, isn't it!
I haven't come across Arabella referred to as Isabel either - this too is something to be examined.
Best wishes,
Mervyn.
